How to read the chart

The pattern is simple once you see it laid out:

Minutes work the same in both systems

Only the hour changes between the two systems. Minutes are identical in standard and military time, so you never convert them. Just attach the minutes to the converted hour:

Note that military time drops the colon: 1545, not 15:45, in strict military usage. Civilian 24 hour clocks usually show the colon, but the numbers mean the same thing.

Half hours and quarter hours

Quarter hours and half hours convert the same way as any other minutes:

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Confusing 1200 and 0000. Noon is 1200, midnight is 0000.
  2. Forgetting the leading zero. 7:00 AM is 0700, written as four digits.
  3. Converting the minutes. Minutes never change; only the hour does.
